Hamburger Goulash

Hamburger goulash is an extremely easy camping recipe that is very delicious and great for an evening meal. Since you only need a skillet and a spatula for this hamburger recipe, cleanup is also very easy.

I made this very same hamburger goulash camping recipe one night, on a beach fishing trip, in the middle of a thunderstorm. I had built a small cart from plywood to haul our fishing equipment to the seashore. I emptied the cart and flipped it on its side to use it for shelter for my camp stove. The wind and rain was blowing so hard that the stove was struggling to stay lit, but somehow I managed to cook my hamburger goulash. It was delicious!

Getting started

I'm certain that there are several hundred hamburger goulash recipes out there. I've kept this one simple, since it falls into the category of camping recipes.

Base ingredients (serves two hungry campers):

  • 1 lb of lean hamburger meat
  • 1 can of Ranch Style beans
  • 1 bell pepper
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Garlic Powder

Cooking Instructions:

Season the hamburger meat with salt, pepper and garlic powder, and brown the meat in a skillet. Add chopped bell pepper and cook on low heat until the bell pepper is soft. Drain off excess grease and add the Ranch Style beans. Continue to cook on low heat until everything is hot.

At this point, the base hamburger goulash is done. You can eat it and enjoy it just the way it is, but if you want to make it a little more interesting, you can do any of the following:

  • Top it off with fresh tomatoes
  • Top it off with fresh avocados
  • Add cubed potatoes and water after draining the grease, and cook until the potatoes are soft
  • Add onions to the hamburger before browning
  • Add pasta to the mix after draining the grease (I haven't ever done this)
  • Add a small can of tomato sauce after draining the grease

As you can see, there are plenty of options available to you. Use your own imagination to turn this base camping recipe into something that is special to you and your family, or leave it the way it is - simple.

Enjoy.
